A group of enterprising Fixers from Bristol are hoping to inspire young people to start their own businesses.

The team have devised a series of workshops for sixth form students covering topics including profit, budgets and marketing.

They’re delivering the programme at Merchants’ Academy and have created workbooks, with the help of Fixers, so students can record what they learn.

‘The aim is to encourage students to come up with their own business ideas and create a proposal for their own enterprises,’ says 20-year-old Elizabeth Cardozo, who’s one of the project leaders.

‘It is intended that their business models would impact positively within their school community and local area.’

The team hope their project will help young people improve their career prospects by making them aware of the different paths they can take once they finish school.

‘We want to give students a better understanding of the options they have, especially as university is an expensive and competitive route,’ adds Elizabeth.

‘We want to fix the issue that many young adults leave school with little knowledge of the basics of business.’

As well as providing background information and an overview of the course, the workbooks also include a glossary of key business terms and links to further information.

‘We are very pleased with the notebooks as they make the programme more serious and bring a level of maturity to it,’ Elizabeth says.

‘They look professional and the definitions in the back are a useful tool for the project and for the future.’

At the end of the eight-week course students will be asked to pitch their business ideas in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style presentation.

Elizabeth says the programme, which is currently underway, is already being well received.

‘The students seem positive,’ she explains.

‘They understand that progression from a simple market stall to successful entrepreneurship really is possible.’
