‘If you make people comfortable with technology from nursery, they’ll be a lot more comfortable with it when they're older and it will seem more of an integral part of life.’


A teenager from Southend is encouraging young people to be more creative with technology.


Isreal Genius, 17, wants children to learn skills such as coding and app development, which he believes can have real benefits and even turn people into innovators of the future.


His story was broadcast on ITV News Anglia and ITV News Meridian (E) on Thursday 8th February.


‘Everyone knows how to use an app, check their Facebook, but they don't really know how to create programmes  or even use their devices to their full potential.  


‘Children, from the day they're born, they're given an iPad or other piece of technology, but it just trains them on how to use it and not how to think about it or how it works.


‘My Fixers project is about encouraging young people to be creative with technology because the future of our economy depends on it.’ 



Stephanie Baxter, Skills, Education and Innovation Lead at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, features in the broadcast and praises the campaign.


‘Isreal's project is great because it does bring these subjects to life and technology and digital skills are so crucial to the future,' she says.


'The UK is suffering from a huge shortage of engineers. We need more young people to want to do engineering and technology as a profession.’


Isreal adds: ‘In the 70s, everyone knew how to wire a plug, or fix their car, but nowadays no one knows how to do anything without calling tech support and that seems to be an issue that we need to address.


‘It's vital to get young people engaged in technology because in the future our economy is going to move to mostly technical and digital skills.’
