Stand Up To Hate Crime

Jennifer Stevens and her team from Bolton are taking a stand against hate crime by encouraging people to speak out and report it.

The 17-year-old and her group have chosen to focus their campaign on abuse directed at LGBT young people, as they feel the consequences of this aren’t always understood.

‘At high school, some people can be quite naive regarding the LGBT community,’ Jennifer says.

‘I think most people don’t realise the impact of name-calling. People say things as casual insults, but they don’t really know the full extent of it.

‘It can have a mental and emotional impact and could lead to anxiety or depression.

‘A few people I know have experienced hate crime. Some have needed to talk to people professionally and others have kept it to themselves.

‘When they think about it, it makes them worry and feel anxious and scared.'

With Fixers, the group has helped create a film to urge people to report hate crime.

It features a young man with his mouth taped shut walking down a corridor - the walls are covered in homophobic slurs.

The dramatic piece ends with the character removing the tape before viewers are reminded that ‘you have a choice, use your voice’.

‘I think the film is effective and gets the message across,’ Jennifer comments.

‘We want to raise awareness and educate people who are naive about the topic.’

The group plan to share their film on social media and hope to reach as wide an audience as possible.

‘Our message to anyone who sees hate crime is to tell the person who is giving out the insults to stop,’ Jennifer adds.

‘You can also talk to the victim and ask if they are okay.

‘Don’t just ignore it or join in.’
