Reach Out

Fixer Corrina Leann Smith

After they saw people close to them struggle with mental health issues, Corrina Leann Smith and her team want to reassure others their age, who feel depressed or worried, that they’re not alone.

Led by 17-year-old Corrina from Bristol, the group are showing their peers that help is available if they ask for it.

‘Unfortunately there is a large stigma surrounding mental ill health which seems to make some shy away from getting help,’ explains Corrina.

‘To add to this there is a definite lack of understanding of what mental health issues really are.

‘Everyone is bound to have a problem at some point, but it shouldn’t end up with people taking their own lives.

'I've watched many people I care about struggle with their mental health and situations like this can be avoided with early intervention.’

With Fixers, the group have helped create a short film to encourage young people to talk about their feelings.

They suggest places to go for support and remind those who are struggling with mental health issues that there are others who can empathise.

You can watch the group’s Fixers film ‘Reach Out’ at the top of this page.

‘I'm very pleased with the finished piece,’ Corrina says.

‘Personally I’ve always found it helpful to talk to someone that you trust, like a close friend or family member.

‘However this may not work for everyone.

‘Young people should try to learn who they are and what works for them as an individual.’

The group are planning to share news of their campaign on social media.

‘It would be great if at least one person realises they are not alone and that they can recover,' Corrina adds.

‘If someone asks for help, I think that’s a success.’
