Name: Chantelle Williams
Age: 21
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: Weston-super-Mare
Campaign: To help better educate the public about epileptic seizures

I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was thirteen years old.

Epileptic seizures are not particularly well understood and I feel that not a lot of people know about the different types that exist.

Seizures can range from a few moments of confusion, to blacking out, to full body convulsions.

The lack of understanding around the condition means people like employers could be disinclined to hire someone with the condition.

That's why I want to hold seminars in Weston-super-Mare, so more people will know how to recognise and react to different types of epileptic seizures.

I think if people were better educated than they wouldn’t have to be so scared.

If they saw someone having a seizure, they would know exactly what to do.

Thank you to Denholm Cox for helping me with this Fix.

July 2014

Since my ITV broadcast I've had some positive feedback from members of the public. You can read some of these comments below:

Julie: 'Well done Chantelle. My son has a form of epilepsy and it would be great to educate people on the subject. Like you said it would be good if, when someone saw a seizure, they would automatically know what to do instead of being frightened and unable to help.'

Kirsty: 'Good luck Chantelle. Epilepsy is so misunderstood - I didn't realise how complex it was until my daughter was diagnosed last year. It definitely needs more visibility and awareness.'
