Name: Hannah Williams
Age: 20
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: Isle of Wight
Campaign: To encourage young carers to find time for themselves

I was fourteen when I first started looking after my mum. Her health problems, which include arthritis and permanent damage to her back, meant she relied on me and my sister to help around the house.

We took turns to do the cooking and cleaning, and often made sure our younger brother was ready for school.

Being a young carer did mean missing out, both in terms of my education and also on social activities. I found it hard to connect with people because I had to be at home all the time and it’s easy to get caught up in thinking, "Is this how it’s going to be for the rest of my life?"

But, with encouragement and support from my family, I’m now away at college completing my studies.

I want to give other young carers the same hope. I want to show them that they’re not alone and that there are ways to take a break from their daily routines.

Whether it be hanging out with friends or taking up a hobby, I want them to know that they don’t have to give up on their own lives in order to look after someone they love.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

The team at Sparsholt College support my project. They gave us permission to shoot scenes for my Fixers film on college grounds.
