Campaign: To find a creative way to address mental health

Young people living with mental health conditions can find it hard to talk about how they’re feeling.

I know this from my own experience of mental ill health.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to open up about my thoughts and emotions - I just needed to find a way to do so that didn’t involve saying words.

For me, being creative really helped my recovery. It enabled me to make sense of my anorexia and depression and begin moving forward.

The aim of my Fixers campaign is to encourage other young people with mental health conditions to express themselves creatively – through both art and writing.

I hope the resulting pieces of work will raise awareness of mental health and show others with similar illnesses that they’re not alone.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Thank you to the charities Beat, Body Gossip and Young Minds for their contributions to my Fixers book.

Thanks also to Aisha, Hannah, Sophie, Kirstie, Zara and Grey for sharing their creative work.

September 2014
I have written a blog for the YoungMinds website, which discusses my Fixers campaign. Click here to read it.

June 2014

I was interviewed on BBC Radio Nottingham about my Fixers campaign and to discuss my experiences with mental health.

May 2014
There has been so much interest in my project that I’ve expanded my book into a website. I’ve had people contact me from all over. Art organisations, young people, mental health service users, professionals, charities and youth organisations have been in touch. It’s really exciting.

I’m in the process of working with my local NHS trust to distribute my books and promote my project.

April 2014
My Fixers book is now complete.

I’ve already received the following positive feedback.

CWP NHS Foundation Trust, CAMHS: ‘The e-book and project look amazing. This is a really good alternative resource for our older young people to use. We look forward to sharing it with them.’

Jonny, Social Worker: ‘The website and book look great, something really unique, good luck!’

Claire, Mental Health Nurse: ‘Insightful yet emotional, everyone working in mental health should read this!’

Judith, mental health service user: ‘The book is really moving and inspiring. It’s lovely to have something that I can relate to so very easily.’

Positive comments were also posted when news of my Fix was shared on Twitter:

‘This is wonderful. It’s such a lovely and creative way of looking at what can be quite a negative experience.’

‘This is a wonderful project, giving voice to those who stigma suppresses.'
