Name: Stuart Balk
Age: 20
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: New Milton, Hampshire
Campaign: To discourage young people from carrying knives

Carrying knives has consequences and I’m concerned that there are young people that don’t realise this.

I know people that have been killed as a result of careless acts of violence, but even if someone has no intention of using a knife, just being in possession of it can result in a prison sentence.

With Fixers, I’ve created a film to highlight the possible repercussions of being caught with a blade.

I will be showing it to organisations including the probation service and youth offending team, and plan to see whether it’s possible to have it screened before films in independent cinemas.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Marianna Turner
James Turner
Aaron McDermott
Stephen Back

Family Mosaic

Family Mosaic provide good quality, affordable homes to rent and buy, as well as care and support services to thousands of people who need extra support.

With around 24,000 homes for rent and serving more than 45,000 people, they are one of the largest housing providers in London, Essex and the Southeast.

The organisation is backing my campaign and working in partnership with Fixers to give their young residents the chance to make a difference.

Hampshire Constabulary
The local police force support my Fix. They allowed us to shoot a scene for my film in one of their cells.

Thank you also to Nick Jones for backing my project. He appeared as an actor in my Fixers film.

March 2014
I launched my campaign at an event on Friday 14th March at the Family Mosaic Brookside Centre in Southampton.

I spoke about my project and my Fixers film was shown to an audience of invited guests.

Around ten people attended, including representatives from the local probation service and youth offending team.

Fixer Josh Richards also came along to show his film about life in prison and the lasting consequences of having a criminal record.

We received the following feedback after the screening:

‘Stuart and Josh both spoke very well to a room of people they didn’t know, which was very brave. I hope they gain further confidence from this project.’

‘I really enjoyed the presentations. I think the films could help make a difference to young people. I was very impressed with Stuart and Josh for their acting and presentation skills.’

‘I thought the films were excellent. They could be developed into adverts for TV!’

‘Very good presentation. I think this will help others.’

‘Good presentations – hopefully the films will get the message across.’
