Campaign: To challenge misconceptions surrounding homelessness

In Bristol the number of people experiencing homelessness is rising and it’s my view that there are many misconceptions surrounding this issue.

Last year, I was among a group of young people who volunteered at the Wild Goose - a local drop-in centre.

It was the first time I’d ever really had the chance to speak to anyone who is homeless and it completely changed my views.

With the help of Fixers, my team and I want to challenge the negative stereotypes attached to people who don't have a permanent place to live.

Our Fixers film captures our experiences during the time we volunteered at the drop-in centre as well as some of the stories of the people it serves.

We hope it will encourage better understanding of homelessness in our community.

The key message of our campaign: By helping others, we will learn to help ourselves.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

The Wild Goose Drop-In Centre
The team at The Wild Goose support our Fix. They run a drop-in centre that serves free hot meals and provides support to the homeless in Bristol. They allowed us to film at the centre and interview their clients.

Bristol City Council
The City Council supports our project. Nick Hooper, Service Director for Strategic Housing, agreed to be interviewed for my broadcast piece.

1625 Independent People
The organisation, that provides specialist projects and services to help young people in and around Bristol, supports our Fix. Dominic Wood, Chief Executive, agreed to share his expertise with us.

Thomas Cassidy
Thomas supported our Fixers project by acting in the reconstruction scenes in my broadcast film.

March 2014
Our Fixers film has been very well received!

Fellow Fixer Amir Mansaray presented the film to students at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, where he attends, and here is what his tutor had to say:

‘It’s very positive to see young people becoming aware of the vulnerable situations of others. It’s also good to see young people interested in the journey of others and helping to take away some of the negative stigma towards people in situations such as homelessness. It conveys openness, compassion as well as willingness to help and support others.’

A representative of the Wild Goose Drop-In Centre, who spoke very positively of the actions of our group, said the following:

‘The Fixers team sensitively approached and interacted with the people who came to Wild Goose. They shared a great awareness of the situations and shared their insight into the challenges, hopes and future possibilities of the people who use our centre.’
