Campaign: To help Welsh-speaking children learn French.

I think it’s important for children to start learning another language when they’re in primary school.


It’s particularly vital as when they get older it becomes more difficult for them to pick up sounds they wouldn’t use day-to-day.

For my Fixers project, I want to help children who speak Welsh as a first language to learn French.

There are already games available for pupils whose first language is English. However, there’s a real lack of resources for their Welsh-speaking peers.

It must be especially difficult for children to learn a new language through the medium of their second language – in this case, English.

That’s why I want to make a Welsh-French language learning game.

I’m hoping to create a type of bingo that will introduce pupils to French vocabulary on a number of different topics including food and family.

I trialled the game with children in Years 1 and 2 at Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Derwen in South Wales. Around 60 children aged between 5 and 7 were involved.


They loved it and learnt the words and sounds very quickly.


Mrs Kath Matthews, Headteacher, provided the following feedback:  


‘The activity was very successful. The resource was visual and appealing to the children and they all engaged in the activity.


‘It was very interactive and suitable for the children we worked with. However, I think it could also be used with older children and maybe reception children.


‘The resource was easy to use and a definite benefit for the activity. It was great to have such a good resource in Welsh!


‘The only minor change I might suggest would be to use lower case letters as opposed to capitals. Younger children learn the lower case letters first.


‘I would definitely use the resource again and would pass it on to other teachers in the school.’
