Campaign: To educate people about cyberbullying

I feel that cyberbullying isn’t as widely understood as it should be, and I am campaigning for an anti-cyberbullying week to be held in schools to benefit students and teachers alike.

Considering its prevalence in today's society, I think it’s important that young people know how to cope with online abuse, and know how to stay safe on the internet.

I was once cyberbullied myself. After school I’d come home and receive messages telling me that I should kill myself. This eventually led to me becoming withdrawn from school life, family and friends. I began self-harming and even considered taking my own life. I didn’t know where to turn.

A close friend of mine eventually encouraged me to get help, and thankfully I managed to rebuild my life.

I now want to be that encouragement for other young people.

With Fixers I want to set up school workshops and an awareness week to show young people that support is out there. I want them to truly understand the dangers of cyberbullying and know how they can stay safe online.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Alex Keith Kirsty Turnbull
Alex Smith Liam Swan
Andrew Babalola Mikey Looney
Brogan Wilson Niall Oliphant
Callum Stevenson Nihar Kalizham-Srinivas
Christos Charalambous Olly Stern
Dion Douglas Polly Rogers
Gary Foxley Reece Ireland
George Johnson Sophie Wakefield
Kay Barman

Marjorie Hamlett-Hughes and Charlie Holder

I would like to thank Marjorie and Charlie for being brave and generous enough to support my Fix. Martin Holder, their son and brother respectively, took his own life in 2012 after being cyber-bullied. Marjorie and Charlie appeared in my broadcast piece and helped me with my research.

Stephen Powell, All Saints Academy Cheltenham

Thank you to Stephen Powell for appearing in my broadcast piece and supporting my campaign.

I was invited to take part in a special edition of BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme on Safer Internet Day.

A panel of experts faced an audience, who were asked to share their experiences.

January 2014

I held workshops at the All Saints Academy in Cheltenham for my anti-cyber bullying project. I received some great feedback from the students who took part! You can see some of these responses below.

'I think anti-cyberbullying week is a good idea as it will bring awareness to the issue and help people know what to do if they or their friends are bullied.'

'Cyberbullying can make a person feel isolated. With cyberbullying you can't stop them because they are with you all the time on your laptop, on your phone, and sometimes people are too scared to speak out. These workshops will make people confident and show them what measures to take to stop it from happening.'

'I think it would be really good to have an anti-cyberbullying week. I know now from having just completed Carney's workshop what I would do if it happened to me. I would block the bully and tell a responsible adult - it's a really good idea to educate people about this.'
