Name: Ben Wearn
Age: 23
Year of the Fix: 2014
Location: Cambridge
Campaign: To bring young people with dyspraxia together

For me, what might appear to be straightforward actions, like crossing the road, doing the shopping and riding a bike, are difficult.

It’s because I have dyspraxia – a condition that affects my co-ordination, spatial awareness and ability to communicate.

I was diagnosed when I was four and at times have found it very isolating.

With the help of Fixers, I want to set up and promote a support group for young people with dyspraxia in the Cambridge area.

I hope that it will help others like me to share their experiences and coping mechanisms.

Annika Mathews and Heather Davis are helping me with my Fix.

Dyspraxia UK
Dyspraxia UK have been supportive of my Fix. Rosaline Van de Weyer, Director, was interviewed for my broadcast film.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire support my project. I was invited to appear on one of their shows to speak about my campaign.

Chloe Copping
Chloe supports my Fixers project. She has dyspraxia and joined us for a discussion that was filmed for my broadcast story.

February 2014

I was interviewed on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire to discuss what it is like living with dyspraxia, and to talk about my campaign.

My story also appeared in the Cambridge News. Click here to read the article.

I have received some really positive feedback following my broadcast piece.

Comments include:

‘I recently saw your ITV report on dyspraxia and was so pleased that you are raising awareness of the condition. I found it both interesting and inspiring for others with dyspraxia. If you host any events in the future I would love to come and meet you all.’

‘Good for you Ben, well done. You should be proud of yourself. It’s about time people understood dyspraxia.’

‘I’m 30 years old and I have dyspraxia. I was 9 when I was diagnosed. It’s brilliant what Ben has done for people with dyspraxia.'

‘Well done Ben for being proactive in making dyspraxia/developmental control difficulties more well known, and for creating a support network.’

‘I have a 10 year old daughter with dyspraxia who struggles with all the usual symptoms. Listening to your story on the news has filled me with encouragement for the future for my daughter.  I would love to learn more about how you overcome and manage your difficulties on a daily basis, to understand how I can help my daughter deal with everyday life and prepare her for the big wide world.’
