Campaign: Challenging misconceptions about skateboarding in Inverness

I own a skate shop here in Inverness and first began skating 12 years ago.

I’ve had broken ankles, wrists and countless sprains, but there’s something about skateboarding that makes me want to keep doing it - it's a passion that I don't think will ever leave me.

I’ve seen how it provides a focus for many young people in Inverness and gives them a drive to achieve things.

Sadly, I don’t feel we’re seen as equals in society. I’ve had many experiences where older people have verbally abused us for skating in the street.

But I’m now working with Fixers to create a film that will educate older generations in the city about the benefits of skateboarding and show them that we’re human too.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Aaron Jolly Alice Rogerson
Alvin Hunte Blythe Gibb
Callum Wallace Cameron MacDonald
Cathy Howie Glenn Fraser
Jack Walker Karalyn Gordon
Kyle Bell Lewis Young
Molly Paterson Phillip Wilson
Ross Ketterer Ross McCormack
Sally Carpenter Stuart Humphries

November 2013.

The feedback from my campaign has been really positive and encouraging. You can see some of it below:

Ricky Campbell, Queen Margaret University
'Respect! I can't skate, but for those who do it and love the hobby, it takes a lot of dedication! Getting the older generation of Inverness to change their views will be a challenge, but in my opinion you're definitely going about it the right way! Knowledge and understanding usually result in changing attitudes. Best of luck!'

Claire Ford, Youth Worker

'Well done! About time someone did something like this!'

Graeme Brooks, British Youth for Christ
'Great community engagement. We all live together in the community, we should give and take with each other!'

Al Carson, Millburn Academy

'It was the same with street BMX in my day, we had a passion no one else understood. Good work guys.'

Lorraine Mackenzie, Charleston Academy
'What a fantastic wee film - well done guys, great idea.'

Catherine Macleod, Teacher
'This is excellent! A fine film guys!'

Naomi Hyslop, Clydebank High School
'Brilliant bunch of guys that have already educated so many people. Well done.'
