Campaign: Stop domestic violence

During my teens, I endured a year of violence - both physical and mental - from my then boyfriend.

It started with mind games, but escalated into punching, kicking, and physical attacks. I even needed hospital treatment on one occasion.

He always used to say it was my fault that he hit me, and that he was sorry for doing it. For a while, I believed him and did not have the strength to walk away.

But then one day, I had enough. Now I am working with Fixers to encourage young women to get out of violent relationships as soon as possible.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Breanna Whetstone
Hazel Caulfield
Yasmin Kuaor
Darneil Thompson
Nicole Brown

Women's Aid

Thank you to this national anti-domestic violence charity for supporting my television piece with information and statistics.

November 2014

I delivered a 30-minute workshop to students and staff at Woodhouse College in North Finchley.  It provoked some interesting discussion about domestic violence and what is considered acceptable within a relationship.

I spoke about the work I’m doing to raise awareness of domestic violence, and my mum was also there to support me and shared her experiences as well.

Here is some feedback from those who attended the workshop:

"Thank you very much for coming to share your experience and to help raise awareness.  It was very brave of you."

"Great talk - very inspirational."

"Very good, very educational and very helpful.  Thank you so much."

One of the young people in the audience also opened up and spoke about her own experience and said a lot of the scenarios in the film and things I had talked about were things that she had experienced.

Lisa Fry, the Student Services Manager at the College, said that a lot of the young people she works with come to her about this sort of circumstances, so this will help when signposting them to support services.

August 2014

My Fixers campaign raising awareness of domestic abuse gained some fantastic recognition this month, after the NSPCC shared my film with their 127,000 followers on Twitter!
