Campaign: Raise support for young carers

Since I was younger, my sister and I have been caring for our mum who has mental and physical conditions which prevent her from running our house.

It is tough work, and can often amount to around 50 hours of care a week. We do this with little assistance, and have to somehow fit in our education too.

The reality is that many young people throughout the UK struggle in their role as a young carer every single day. The work they do is often unseen though as they attempt to juggle the life they want with the life they have.

With Fixers, myself and a group of other young carers from Worcester are creating a first-person documentary film which shows a day in the life of a young carer.

I hope this film will enlighten young people to the struggles we face, and will educate health professionals and decision-makers about the support we need.

Neil Phillips from the Worcestershire Youth Services was interviewed for the broadcast story about our Fixers project. He says: ‘It’s important that we find out more about what these young carers do because they’ve developed a skill set that a lot of people their age have not got. It’s important that people see that.’

Worcester Young Carers group
