Campaign: To bridge the generation gap

Swansea is a very multicultural city, and many people who are here often follow different paths than the rest of their family.

This can sometimes cause misunderstanding as families with traditional values feel threatened by the “Western” culture of their children, while the younger generation feel their older relatives are trying to restrict them.

Most often, there isn’t actually a problem – there is just a problem of communication surrounding expectations.

This is what I am trying to solve through a short DVD film. Through an event in Swansea, I am interviewing a variety of people from across the city to establish their stories, their culture, and how they feel within their families and culture.

I will then be taking this DVD with me to workshops, where I will get families communicating and understanding each other.

Ethnic Youth Support Team (EYTS)

I want to thank everyone at the team who has worked with me on this project to gather people together.

Helal Uddin from EYTS said:

'I have been on the website and seen some of the projects. I am very impressed and amazed by the work Fixers are doing in the community, well done to all at Fixers and to everyone (especially young people) who took part in the different projects.'

Dr Paul Hutchings, Psychology programme Director at Swansea Metropolitan University

Thank you to Paul who appeared in my broadcast piece to discuss the need for communication between generations.

April 2013

I hosted my workshop which was filmed for the DVD I am creating. Eighty-seven people turned up over the course of the day and spoke about how integrated they felt in the community.

Audience feedback was positive, with people saying the film was "very interesting", "cool", "amazing" and "inspiring".
