Campaign: Giving girls confidence through music

I started playing Bass when I was about 10 and guitar when I was 13, which was pretty different to most girls my age.

I have never conformed to stereotypes of how girls should be, and I think this shocked a few people. But I think since forming a rock band - My Everest - with my friends, even more people have been shocked.

However, we do not think this reaction is right, and that is why the band and I are trying to give girls the confidence to pick up musical instruments, join bands, and just create an image for themselves which they are happy with.

There is a lot of pressure on girls today, especially during their teens, to look a certain way or act a certain way. Between myself and the band, we could not name more than two current all girl rock bands, and could only think of a few other female musicians who write their own material.

At the same time, we could think of lots of celebrities, often ones who are made to look so fake in magazines and on the internet.

We're producing a music video which aims to give young women confidence and inspire them to seek their own identity, away from stereotypes. It's all about girl power!

We're a four-piece rock band from across Hampshire made up of myself and three other great girls who are helping with my project:

Laura McReynolds (16)
I started playing classical guitar when I was about eight-years-old but have since learned electric guitar and started singing with the band. I study English Literature, Physics, Maths and Modern History at college in Farnborough when not with the band.

Edel Fogarty (16)

I started playing classical guitar at the age of seven but later started playing a bit of electric too, although I had never really given much thought to seriously playing the bass until I joined the band. I study Biology, Psychology, Business Studies and Spanish at Sixth Form in Farnborough, where I live.

Lizzie Cooper Smith (17)

I’ve been playing drums for about five-years, since I was 12, and other interests of mine include writing and dance – I’ve actually been dancing since I was two-years-old, which is a huge contrast to the drumming. I’m currently in Sixth Form and studying for my A-Levels, which are: English Literature, French and Psychology.
