Campaign: To give a voice to the homeless

Homelessness is a huge issue and I wanted to do something about it because I have seen how it can affect people.

I had an uncle who was living on the streets before he died. I would see him and not understand why he was there.

Also, if it wasn’t for my family and friends, I could have been homeless myself after a relationship broke down.  I was sofa surfing for a while and the experience really opened my eyes to the issue.

With Fixers, my team and I helped to organise an event about homelessness at the Lewington Centre on 16th April.

It was called ‘I have a Voice’ and it featured speakers, musicians and poetry performers as well as a talk from the MP for Lewisham Deptford, Vicky Foxcroft, Church Housing Trust and L&Q housing association.

I would like to thank all of the performers and speakers at the event and those who shared their stories.

I hope this project is the start of more work around the issue of homelessness in the future.

It’s time we made change for the better.

I would like to thanks Jite Janere and Tessa Martineau for helping me with this Fix.

For over 50 years, L&Q has been driven by its mission to create places where people want to live.  A leading housing association, it owns or manages more than 71,000 homes across London and the South East - making it one of the largest residential landlords in the capital.  L&Q invests in people and the communities it serves and over the coming year, through the L&Q Foundation, it will invest £7 million on community initiatives, helping residents improve their life chances.

L&Q is working in partnership with Fixers because we recognise the positive contribution that our young residents can and do make to their communities, and we are keen to give them the right support to do this. To see the Fixer projects we have funded to date please click on the links provided.

“Fixers is an exciting opportunity to empower young people  to make positive changes, within their communities and raise awareness of issues that affect L&Q’s young residents.” Paul Nehra, L&Q’s Community Investment Manager.
