Campaign: To show young carers that it’s okay to ask for help

I think the first time I would have been classified as a young carer was when I was between two and three-years-old. I saved my mum’s life. She was having a seizure and I somehow managed to get hold of a phone and call my grandparents.

My mum is diabetic and has epilepsy and my brother has both physical and mental disabilities.

This means I have responsibilities at home. Combined with university and work, this can be quite difficult to deal with alone.

My Fixers project is to encourage young carers, like me, to take care of themselves.

It can be all too easy to forget about your own health and wellbeing when you have loved ones to look after.

I love my family and would never complain about what I do, but I want others in my position to know that it’s okay to ask for help.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Bethany Barnes Kay Torrance
Connor Chapman Lewis Bailey
Danielle Younger Michael Holland
Dominic Skeen Mikayla Boorman
Emily Chipchase Nikita Johnston
Jessica Longlands Nycole Herniman
John Emery Victoria Redford
Joseph Heard Zara Parker
Katarina Moore

Carers Trust

Young Carers Support Worker, Anthony Lea, supports our Fix. He allowed us to hold a meeting at the Carers Trust and helped us to conduct research for our project. He also agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast piece.

Thank you to Annalise Middleton, Benjamin Marrs, Dale Cutts and Georgina Williams, who were also involved in the broadcast item.
