Campaign: To help put a stop to the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM)

I have Somali roots and in Somalia female genital mutilation (FGM) is prevalent. It’s also practiced in other countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and affects tens of thousands of women here in the United Kingdom.

The procedure - to intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons - is outdated, illegal in the UK, and has no place in modern society.

It can be harmful, both physically and psychologically, but is still carried out because in some cultures it’s perceived as a pathway to womanhood.

With Fixers, I want to start conversations about FGM, raising awareness of the practice and encouraging people to talk about it more freely.

Educating future generations is the best way to convince them to protect their daughters, and I hope that by creating a film to show to school pupils I can help put a stop to FGM.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Nazra Abdi Sania Salim
Cansel Akin Lyna Taleb
Gulsum Altinbas Reem Elrifi
Ena Hyka Selin Aydin
Khalid Yahya Talya Scott Mason

Hoda Ali, Anti-FGM Campaigner
Hoda Ali supports my Fixers project. A survivor of FGM, she agreed to be interviewed on the topic to appear in my broadcast piece.

Raj Jatlote, Islington Youth Council

Raj requested to use my completed film on the youth council website and helped out during the planning stages for the campaign.

Rehana Popal, Highbury Roundhouse

Preparing meeting space and helping secure support, The Highbury Roundhouse has supported me throughout.
