Campaign: To challenge misconceptions landlords may have about tenants on benefits

I’ve experienced first–hand the prejudice that can prevent people on benefits from renting in the private sector.

When I was younger, my mum was made redundant and we needed to move into council housing.

It was very difficult for us to get ourselves back into private housing after that. It wasn't until I'd graduated and found a job that we were able to do this.

Some landlords seem to think that people on benefits won't be able to make their rent payments or will trash their properties.

This just isn't true. With Fixers, I want to change this attitude.

Those on low incomes can be good tenants, just like anyone else.

Usman Hussein and Umar Khan are helping me with this Fix.

Professor Sara Chandler, London South Bank University
Professor Sara Chandler, a housing solicitor who specialises in landlord and tenant law, has supported my Fix. She agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast piece.

August 2014

A broadcast story about my Fixers campaign was shown on ITV News London.

Here is what one viewer had to say after seeing the piece:

Susan: 'Thank you for all that you are doing for people on benefits. I am also finding it difficult to find a landlord that will accept me, even though I am a nice person and would look after the property as I have done wherever I have lived in the past.'

My campaign was written about on Pims.co.uk which you can click here to read. It was also featured in the Haringey Independent. Click on the image below to see the full piece.
