Campaign: To promote the use of sign language

I’m a student at the Royal School for Deaf Children in Margate and my friends and I communicate using British Sign Language.

There are people that look down on me if they talk to me and I don’t understand them. This knocks my confidence and makes me feel angry.

With Fixers, my team and I are hoping to make others more deaf aware.

We’ve taken our campaign to people in Margate - teaching them basic sign language and how to finger spell.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with my Fix:

Mitchell Lambe Philip Almand
Wayne Howes Callum Frew
Wilfred Jenkins Rebeka Rowal
Micheal Howe Reece Paul
Sean Hegarty Louis Gorman
Jessica Buw Melissa Carr
Nicole Weatherley Georgia Rawdery
Briony Moore Rachael Olamuyiwa
Cameron Chan Francesca Mulligan Philip
Shara Plumer Sophie Chelsea Reid
Carys Haesden Danielle Tonye Cookey-Gam

Youth Social Action Fund

My Fixers project was supported by the Cabinet Office’s Youth Social Action Fund.

As part of the Cabinet Office initiative ‘Step Up to Serve’, which is spearheaded by HRH the Prince of Wales, Fixers is working in partnership with the Youth Social Action Fund (YSAF) to offer the Fixer experience specifically to young people aged between 16 and 20 in Birmingham and parts of Kent.

The Royal School For Deaf Children Margate

The team at the school, where I am a student, have been very supportive of our Fix. Zoe Hammond, a member of staff, agreed to be interviewed to appear in my broadcast piece.

Our campaign was featured in the Littlehampton Gazette. Click here to read the full article.

July 2014

We held a workshop on Wednesday 16th July at the Quarter Deck Youth Centre in Cliftonville in Margate to encourage others to learn sign language.

We taught around 30 young people and 10 members of staff how to sign a song. It was positive to be able to share our experiences of being deaf.

We also worked with an artist to produce small hand-shaped sculptures to represent the British Sign Language alphabet.
